Itinerary

Departure from Chania
Early morning pickup from your accommodation. We travel south through traditional Cretan villages towards the White Mountains (Lefka Ori).
Arrival at Omalos Plateau
Brief stop at the Omalos Plateau (1,100m altitude) for breakfast and final preparations. Enjoy panoramic mountain views before starting the descent.
Start of Hike - Xyloskalo
Begin the descent into the gorge via the famous wooden steps of Xyloskalo. The initial 2km descent offers spectacular views of the gorge below.
Ancient Cypress Forest
Pass through the ancient forest of Cretan cypress trees, some over 2,000 years old. Watch for the endemic Cretan wild goat (kri-kri) along the rocky slopes.
Samaria Village Ruins
Reach the abandoned village of Samaria, evacuated in 1962 when the area became a national park. Rest stop with packed lunch near the old church of Ossia Maria.
The Iron Gates (Sideroportes)
Navigate through the narrowest point of the gorge - just 3 meters wide with cliffs towering 300 meters above. This is the most dramatic section of the hike.
Gorge Exit & Old Agia Roumeli
Complete the 16km hike at the old village of Agia Roumeli. Final 2km walk to the coastal village along a wide path.
Agia Roumeli Beach
Free time to swim in the Libyan Sea, relax on the beach, or enjoy refreshments at a waterfront taverna. Well-deserved rest after the challenging hike.
Boat to Hora Sfakion
Take the scenic boat ride (ticket not included, €15) along the southern coast to Hora Sfakion. Enjoy views of remote beaches and dramatic cliffs.

Kostas grew up in the White Mountains and has known the Samaria Gorge since childhood. Today he is a certified mountain guide and shows you his homeland with passion and patience.

The Experience

Crete has postcard beaches. Crete has Instagram sunsets. And yes, Crete has tourist crowds. But the Samaria Gorge? It's different. No mass tourism here. No selfie sticks. No sun loungers. Just you, nature, and the feeling that you're experiencing something bigger than yourself. You start early – so early that the air is still cool and the sun is just creeping over the mountain ridges. The first few kilometers feel like a gentle warm-up. But then it gets spectacular: the rock walls close in, the path narrows, and suddenly you're standing at the famous 'Iron Gate' – the narrowest point of the gorge, where the rocks are just 3 meters apart but tower 300 meters into the sky. At the end, the Libyan Sea awaits. And a feeling you won't forget.

Why This Tour Is Different

There are apps that tell you where to hike. There are guides who recite facts. And there are tours that rush you through the gorge like it's a race. This is different. Kostas, your guide, knows every stone, every tree, every story of this gorge. He doesn't just show you the way – he shows you why this place is so special. He explains how the gorge was formed. Which plants grow here. Where the kri-kri goats hide. And he takes his time. Time for breaks. Time for photos. Time for the moments that matter. Plus: the group is small (maximum 7 people). That means: no anonymous crowd, but real conversations, real pace, real experiences.
